Olios: Drop-in classes led by professors
In this edition of "A Philosopher Walks into a Bar" a format where western philosopher Jeanne Proust meets an Olio teacher from a different background for a free-flowing conversation, we have Darryl Aiken-Afam. Darryl will be dropping in to share how his background in eastern philosophy, martial arts, and cognitive psychology brings him to very different understandings of the mind-body connection we call "The Self" and he'll have a chance to chat with Jeanne who is well versed in how the great philosophers of the west have dealt with this enigma.
During this hour long conversation, we'll dive into the following topics while also leaving ample time for audience questions:
What is the relationship between identity and self?
What is most essential to what I call "myself"?
What makes me an individual - different from, but also somehow similar to others?
Isn't the obsession with self-care indicative of modern narcissism?
What is the relationship between soul or mind and body? And is the mind the same thing as the soul?
Darryl and Jeanne will discuss how consciousness, awareness, personal identity and agency can be explored and understood in radically different ways.
Darryl Aiken-Afam is CEO of AFAM Consulting and a martial artist and a practitioner of the Taoist healing and meditation arts, Meridian Cleansing Qigong, Zen Shiatsu and Taoist psychology. Darryl created his own system of Chi energy-based yoga called Meridian Touch back in 2000, derived from Chinese Tao-In exercises and blended with Zen Shiatsu, Athletic Training, and Martial Arts philosophy.

Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.
Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
