Olios: Drop-in classes led by professors
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” - Marcus Aurelius
Philosophers Massimo Pigliucci and Jeanne Proust will question quotes like this one and Stoicism in general to shed light on its modern day application. Participants will have a chance to ask questions in a free flowing forum live on zoom. Upon rsvp, you will receive a link to an audio interview between Jeanne and Massimo for some context before this Olio.
Some questions we'll discuss are:
- Is happiness really under our control?
- What are differences/similarities between the Epicurean philosophy and stoicism?
- Why are questions about the cosmos (or the order of nature) relevant to our thinking about the good life?
- What type of determinism is promoted by stoicism, and how can we reconcile the idea of an overall cosmic order of things with a commitment to moral / political progress?
- Is Determinism inconsistent with the free will necessary for leading a moral life/a politically enngaged existence?
While teaching at different universities in New York, Jeanne is advocating for a widening of philosophical education beyond the academia frontiers by participating in different events open to the general public. She taught at Rikers Island as a volunteer, and regularly gives public talks in philosophy, leading her to recently produce her own podcast, "Can You Phil It?”.
Zoom link will be sent upon signup.
Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.
Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
