Olios: Drop-in classes led by professors

New York is the city that never sleeps, and her name is always written in bold letters on a marquee, outlined in neon and flashing bulbs and displayed proudly on Broadway. While the Theater District might feel like a permanent New York fixture to the island natives, it's anything but: the evolution of the musical as a genre was sculpted and shaped by the radical changes in New York's Theater District and cultural revolutions over the last 100 years. In this Olio we'll trace the origins of the Theater District in New York and track the changes made over the last 100 years through important examples from the genre.

Teacher: Whitney George

George holds an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts, a masters degree from Brooklyn College Conservatory, and is currently continuing her studies as a PhD candidate at the CUNY Grad Center. In addition to her composing and conducting, George teaches at Brooklyn College, works at the Hitchcock Institute of American Studies and is the Managing Director for New York's AME.

What is Think Olio?

Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.

Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
