For the first edition of Olio Film Night, where a professor guides us through a classic film, we'll be taking a look at one of the most famous collaborative teams in cinematic history: director Alfred Hitchcock and composer Bernard Herrmann. The culmination of their creative efforts can be seen in a number of their famous works (Rear Window, Psycho, and The Birds to name a few), but during this even't we will investigate Vertigo in detail.

The opening title sequence is one of the best known in cinema for it's evocative and immersive quality, making the viewer feel the vertigo that the title implies. Music has a wonderful opportunity to deepen our understanding of a film's themes, and Herrmann scores Hitchcock's works with a masterful hand, complete with thematic unity and colorful orchestrational detail.

In the golden age of cinema, works put forth by the Hitchcock/Herrmann team set a gold standard for those collaborative partnerships to follow. Join us in this special Olio where Professor George will discuss some themes and specific scenes of Vertigo before we watch the film, followed by a Q-A session. Everyone will be asked to find this film for themselves for streaming during the Olio.
