We’ll be gathering old and new Olio greats for a day-long festival in a historic Clinton Hill Mansion using the theme of myth to guide the way. Our teachers will explore stories of Economics, Geography, and the Body before we go into the nighttime hours with a dance party. All of the programming will take place outdoors and there will be a cash bar on-site with a snack break to explore the great restaurants in the neighborhood.

Money, Space & The Body: A Day of Myth

Olios: Drop-in classes led by professors

We've got three Olios lined-up which may seem to have nothing in common (and maybe they don't) but hey, when we give our teachers a theme they tend to take it to some pretty far-out places and things seem to turn out pretty great.

Come join us at the Clinton Hill Mansion backyard for this day of immersive learning featuring:

The Myth of Money taught by Andres Bernal

When presenting new social services (medicaid, green new deal, and student debt cancellation), public officials are always asked to show dollar for dollar where the money would come from. The public conversation also centers around fears of deficits and national debt, but what do these words actually mean and what can our government actually do? In fact, what the heck is money? We'll look to Modern Monetary Theory to discuss the nature and origin of money, the purpose of taxes, and the issue of inflation.

Naughty Geography taught by Lauren Hudson

In its earliest form, the discipline of Geography perpetuated some dangerous social and spatial myths. Today, the work of many Geographers is to correct the past by disrupting three general myths about space: space as empty, space as limited, and space as inevitable. This Olio will trace how such tales about space circulate in our own lives, and how they're confronted.

and finally,

A special Movement Workshop and performance from MICHIYAYA dance collective.

We'll have plenty of time to mingle throughout the day and then, of course, we'll end the night with an outdoor dance party

💃

All of the programming will take place outdoors and there will be a cash bar on-site with a snack break to explore the great restaurants in the neighborhood.

Tickets are available at sliding scale pricing and any extra support you can give will go towards ramping back up our programming during this time.

We’ll be bringing on new teachers, new venues, and seeking out new opportunities to explore NYC + online through the Olio lens.

What is Think Olio?

Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.

Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
