We are relatively comfortable with the idea that work takes time. Labor gobbles up the majority of our day and the majority of our lives. To geographers, space is just as crucial. After all, everything that happens to us happens in space, and this includes  the ways we work. From company towns to working from home, all work happens in some space--even as that space becomes more and more abstract or we become further and further alienated from production.

This Olio will discuss how geographers understand the codependent relationship between labor and space in our homes, our cities, and internationally. We will cover how spatial ‘solutions’ are deployed by capitalists and workers alike to resolve labor crises and think through the repercussions of those strategies. Make sure you have pen and paper, as we’ll workshop some of our own spatial labor conditions and discuss how geographic spatial theory can help us better understand our current COVID work-lives.
