This truly historic moment could be the turning point in which real, substantive changes in race relations will occur. For changes to be long lasting and comprehensive, changes must occur at multiple levels: internally, interpersonally, and structurally. This Olio will be an interactive and reflective process in which we will excavate the deeply entrenched racist ideologies within us that prevent us from living our most liberated selves because when we dehumanize others, we deny our own humanity.
It’s easy for us to be conscious of the more obvious ways that racism dehumanizes black and brown folks in the US. But what about the unconscious and hidden ways in which we perpetuate these harmful narratives? It is the time to be courageous and meet the racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia that lives in the shadows. During this process, we should expect that we all carry some level of these false narratives deeply inside of us and we are WORKING. We are TRYING. And this is a LIFELONG journey. And may we all be blessed enough to be held as we excavate these false narratives that have been deeply embedded within each of us.
As folks learn more about the incredible brutality inflicted on black and brown bodies, it can be overwhelming to hold all at once and focus energy where it is most useful and constructive. This series will build in ways to stay grounded in your body and to be aware of how the mind and body reacts to uncomfortable and terrifying realizations about the external world and even ourselves. The purpose is not to shame but to become more self-aware and grow. This workshop will explore what it means to decolonize ourselves. We will do grounding exercises to become mindful of HOW the body and mind react when we are faced with overwhelming realities and how to stay connected as we dig deep so that we can sustain this growth. After a brief introduction on a specific aspect of white supremacy, we will break out into smaller groups to share what we are comfortable sharing.
This Olio is open to all folks but intended specifically for white and non-black POC who have more work to do amongst ourselves.

Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.
Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
