*Sold Out* Attraction or Fetish? Exploring Racial Trends in Dating

Dating and marriage trends show an increase in interracial relationships over many decades. However, different patterns in these interracial relationships warrant a deeper look. Statistics demonstrate an unnerving consistency between our social hierarchies and interactions on dating apps. Are our racial dating preferences simply that? Or do they reveal a deeper level of bias shaping who we consider desirable and attractive? Can we choose who we love? How does race, homophobia, sexism, classism, and ableism impact how we see our own attractiveness and desirability?
This Olio traces the history of interracial relationships in the US. It also addresses how western imperialism has impacted attractiveness and desirability in the Global South.
Let’s dive deep into attraction, fetishization, and explore how we can be actively anti-racist, even in the bedroom.

Teacher: Kim Nguyen
Kim Nguyen is a doctoral student at City University of New York in the Critical Social and Personality Psychology program and a research associate at sexgenlab.org. She teaches at Pratt Institute and Hunter College. Kim is interested in the different ways in which social injustice and power dynamics dehumanize and disrupt our ability to connect with one another (and ourselves).
