This Olio explores the parallels between Netflix's series "Hip Hop Evolution" and the canonical narrative of Renaissance Art History. What can we learn through this comparison? Were Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur the Leonardo and Bellini of their day? In what way has the narrative of history, the way it is told, and by whom impact our understanding of culture? These and other questions will be explored in this interdisciplinary deep-dive of art and rap.

Teacher: Ted Barrow
Ted Barrow teaches in Barnard College's Pre-College Program over the summer, focusing on the relationship between art and film in New York City, and has taught art history courses at Baruch, City College, the College of Staten Island, and Brooklyn College. Barrow currently teaches at Cooper Union, and runs a popular satirical Instagram account about skateboarding (@feedback_ts).
