How did SNL portray the interpreter for the deaf after Hurricane Sandy? What do "tooken" and "Liam Neesons" have to do with African American Speech? What was really going on with Sarah Palin's talk that seemingly went nowhere. Why is Trump so damn popular? While many overt forms of racism, classism, misogyny and ableism have been identified and rooted out, society still seems largely okay with using language as a way to trash other people, or at least comment on them. This lecture examines the fallacies undergirding linguistic prejudice through the lens of media, popular culture, comedy, and politics.
Teacher: Maureen Matarese
Maureen T. Matarese is a professor at BMCC. She has a doctorate from Columbia University and is a linguist with a specialization in discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics. She is the U.S. expert on social work interaction (particularly in homeless settings) and the discourse of street-level bureaucrats.
