Radiohead's third album, OK Computer marks a departure from the group's earlier style as solidified by the guitar-heavy and lyrically withdrawn album The Bends released in 1995. Recorded mostly in 1996-7, Radiohead worked specifically with the medium of the CD format in Ok Computer to convey their message of the disillusionment of consumerism, political isolation, and more amongst themes relevant to the emerging 21st century, among a landscape of music much more experimental (and electronically manipulated) than the group had used before. Hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time (and re-released in 2017 because of the magnitude of its message), OK Computer contains a number of singles that propelled Radiohead into an international icon, including "Paranoid Android", "Karma Police", and "No Surprises". Join us for this Olio as we delve into the history of the album, how it was recorded, and some of the more basic elements ongoing in the principle tracks that contributed to its popularity and success.George holds an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts, a masters degree from Brooklyn College Conservatory, and is currently continuing her studies as a PhD candidate at the CUNY Grad Center. Think Olio is here to put the liberation back into the liberal arts.
Classically, the liberal arts, were the education considered essential for a free person to take an active part in civic life. To counter a humanities that has been institutionalized and dehumanized we infuse critical thinking, openness, playfulness, and compassion into our learning experience.
